Giraffe Courtship

My first trip to Africa, I saw lions mating my first night out in the bush.  This trip, it was giraffes while out on a morning monitoring session.

When we came upon the journey, there was a male obviously doing his best to put the moves on the female.  He kept in step with her whenever she moved and pressed himself against her back and side whenever she was still.  He even chose an area full of lovely flowering jacaranda trees to seduce her.

I was told they could be at this for hours and the likelihood of catching them in the act was rare, and frankly, if I blinked, I’d miss it anyways.  Well, moments later she consented and then blink it was over.  Perhaps there will be a New Years 2016 baby giraffe at Zimanga Game Reserve 🙂

In addition to his following and pressing against her, he tried a neck nuzzle.

Deed done, it's time to go find some acacia leaves.
